2014 and 2015 Heifetz Institute alumna Allegra Whiting is 18 years old, and a native of West Caldwell, NJ. She began studying cello with Marnie Kaller at the age of five. In 2011 she was admitted to the Pre College Division of the Juilliard School where she studies with Clara Kim. During the 2012-2013 season, she was a 1st place winner in the New York Music Competition, and a 3rd place winner in the Bravura Concerto Competition. In addition, Allegra was chosen to play on the Rising Stars Concert Series at the Methodist Church in Morristown, NJ. As a two-time winner of the National Young Musicians Showcase Competition she performed solos at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She has been a featured soloist with the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra. She was also the winner of the String Division of the Florence Boughton Competition for Young Artists, and the Frank and Lydia Bergen Scholarship Concerto Auditions. She has played in Master Classes for Lynn Harrell, Steven Isserlis, Andre Emelianoff, Carter Brey and Eric Bartlett. She also participated in a workshop and performance of the Bach Goldberg Variations with Matt Haimovitz. During the summers of 2012 and 2013 she studied at Meadowmount Music School. This past summer, she studied at the Heifetz Institute and was chosen to perform in their “Celebrity Series”. She was selected to be a member of “Heifetz on Tour” in Jamestown Rhode Island where she performed solo and chamber music in efforts to interest students in classical music. In previous summers, she attended Kinhaven Music Camp in Vermont and NJ Youth Orchestra Chamber Music Camp. In her free time Allegra enjoys swimming, tennis, skiing, photography, and traveling. She is a student of Steven Doane at the Eastman School of Music.
