The Heifetz International Music Institute has joined forces with Mary Baldwin University to create an innovative three-week intensive summer program for gifted young string musicians (violin, viola, and cello) between the ages of nine and thirteen. The program is a natural alliance between the University’s Program for the Exceptionally Gifted and the Heifetz Institute, both of which have won broad recognition as “category leaders” in their respective fields. Mary Baldwin’s pioneering PEG program was established in 1985 to offer academically gifted young women between the ages of 12 and 16 an opportunity to bypass high school to pursue an undergraduate degree, in a fully supervised, nurturing environment designed to support the unique intellectual and emotional needs of these brilliant young minds.
The Heifetz Institute is an intensive six-week summer program for gifted violin, viola, and cello students, featuring world-renowned artist faculty, the Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar, the unique Heifetz Performance and Communication Training©, and a 40-plus summer Festival of Concerts, taking place in and around the Mary Baldwin campus in historic downtown Staunton, Virginia – in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The Institute has won world recognition as one of the premiere summer programs for young artists on the verge of their professional careers.

HeifetzPEG Performance and Communication Training©
The Heifetz Institute was founded by Founder & Artistic Director Daniel Heifetz upon the revolutionary educational concept that young musicians can be taught to communicate the emotion of music, beyond mere technical agility and beautiful playing. Thus, in addition to the intensity (and fun!) of the overall program, each HeifetzPEG student will participate in a series of 50-minute-per-day classes in the following areas, in custom-tailored modules taught by veteran actors, dancers, opera singers, pop and blues musicians, entertainment, exercise and healthcare professionals:
- Speaking in Public
- Freedom of Expression
This innovative, comprehensive, and cross-disciplinary curriculum can enhance anyone’s ability to become a more expressive and communicative artist, and is of an area of particular importance for enabling these gifted young performers to mature into major artistic talents. More details about the program can be found here.
Housing and Accommodations
HeifetzPEG students will reside in a separate, secure dormitory on the Mary Baldwin University campus, on floors divided by gender. Each floor will be staffed by dedicated HeifetzPEG Resident Advisors, providing supervision, programming, and emotional support. On duty during nights and weekends, these young adults will be trained in meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of these gifted young people, and will lead evening activities, weekend trips, and provide transportation to local events.
HeifetzPEG students will dine and have the opportunity to socialize in the same central dining location as the six-week Heifetz Institute students.
Tuition and Fees:
The Comprehensive Fee for the three-week HeifetzPEG program is $3,500. This fee includes tuition, housing, meals, student activities, and airport shuttle service between the Institute campus and either Dulles International, Charlottesville, or Shenandoah Valley airports. All the dorm rooms for HeifetzPEG students at Mary Baldwin University are roomy, comfortable, and air-conditioned. Students will share same-sex spacious double rooms in a secure, controlled-access separate dormitory building exclusively reserved for HeifetzPEG students, faculty, and Resident Advisors.
Students displaying outstanding talent and or demonstrated need will be eligible for limited scholarship support to attend the HeifetzPEG program. Students and their parents wishing to be considered for scholarship assistance will be required to fill out the Financial Aid portion of their application thoroughly and carefully. The HeifetzPEG application fee cannot be waived and is not subject to financial assistance.
