Heifetz International Music Institute Day
July 2, 2016
WHEREAS, Daniel Heifetz is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Heifetz International Music Institute; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Heifetz has dedicated himself to the art of communication through performance and education for more than three decades; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Heifetz pioneered a Performance and Communication Training method for artists—that led in 1996 to his creation of a summer Institute and Festival of Concerts dedicated to its principles—which remains unique to this day; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, the Heifetz International Music Institute entered into an unprecedented partnership with Mary Baldwin College to locate its six-week summer program on the college’s campus in Staunton, Virginia, becoming at once a significant economic driver and a source of community pride, and enhancing the visibility and prestige of the Staunton area as a tourist destination; and
WHEREAS, in subsequent years, the Institute has deepened its involvement in the region by developing engagement and outreach efforts in our schools, churches, and community centers, including the creation of “Heifetz On Tour” and “Virginia Visiting Artist in Residence” programs; and
WHEREAS, a six-week intensive training program for some of the world’s finest young violin, viola, and cello performers ranging in age from 13 to 27, and the new three-week HeifetzPEG program for those ages 8 to 13, has brought aspiring students to Staunton from across the nation and around the world, representing 21 states and 15 foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, the Heifetz Institute’s 2016 summer program and Festival of Concerts brings “Carnegie Hall to the Shenandoah,” with no fewer than 45 concert events in six weeks in and around Staunton, ranging from captivating “Stars of Tomorrow” concerts at Mary Baldwin College’s Francis Auditorium to the brand-new “Heifetz Summer Symposium” at the Blackfriars Playhouse; and
WHEREAS, in 2015, the Institute further cemented its ties to the City of Staunton by relocating its office headquarters and box office to, and establishing its brand-new gift shop in, the city’s historic downtown business district;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Carolyn W. Dull, Mayor of the City of Staunton, on behalf of Council of the City of Staunton, Virginia, do hereby proclaim, Saturday, July 2, 2016, as Heifetz International Music Institute Day, and, on behalf of the City, express congratulations to the Institute on the occasion of its 20th anniversary and deep appreciation to Founder and Artistic Director Daniel Heifetz, as we happily witness and celebrate his vision on our city’s stages, and in our sanctuaries and concert halls.
