Ilya, get your fiddle!
So rang out Founder and Artistic Director Daniel Heifetz‘ cry at a Heifetz International Music Institute “Celebrity Series” concert, which, suddenly-without-warning , was interrupted by a broken string on “Pablo,” the prized 1717 cello that belonged to Pablo Casals and is now in the hands of Heifetz Institute cellist Amit Peled.
The string snapped, and we all were agape.
Except for Heifetz, who implored faculty violinist Ilya Kaler (again, suddenly-without-warning) to jump up and “play something” while the rest of us fretted, wondered and watched.
What we witnessed was spontaneous, impromptu…and kind of wonderful!
(Ilya is, after all, the only “Triple Crown Winner” in the annals of violin competitions…)
