I stand before you today as a sinner in need of absolution. – Violist Matt Cohen
2017 Artist in Residence Matt Cohen readily confessed his sin before a full Francis Auditorium house on a special Sunday Matinee concert: “Borrowing” an acknowledged classic for the cello – Tchaikovsky’s Variations On A Rococo Theme – and having the temerity to arrange it for the viola! His partner in crime in this performance his Heifetz faculty pianist Carlos Avila. In his introduction, Matt hears the work of both Tchaikovsky the Mozart admirer as well as ballet master, in a work he calls “elegant, graceful, and charming throughout.” See if you don’t agree!
