Sure, you’ve heard the music to Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” violin concertos, but did you know that there are words to go with it? In the original 1725 publication of what was destined to become the Italian composer’s all-time megahit, Vivaldi inscribed brief little descriptive sonnets before the start of each movement. We asked the celebrated American poet Daniel Mark Epstein to make a fresh English translation of the 18th-century prose, which truly sets a sharply-etched pictorial stage for what Vivaldi so brilliantly realizes in the music that follows.
See – and hear! – for yourself, as longtime NPR and SiriusXM host Bob Edwards lends his voice to this sold-out Heifetz On Tour performance at the Kreeger Museum of Art in Washington, DC of Vivaldi’s”Winter” Concerto. Heifetz 2018 alum Yehun Danny Jin, is the soloist, joined by violinists Kiarra Saito-Beckman, and new Heifetz Institute Artistic Director Nicholas Kitchen; violist Matt Cohen, and cellist Zhihao Wu.
