With the music world’s eyes trained on Queenstown, New Zealand, site of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition (with, as of this writing three of the six semifinalists all alums of the Heifetz Institute!), it seems like an opportune time to feature our own Kiwi ambassador in performance. 21-year old cellist Dominic Lee hails from Tuaranga, Bay of Plenty, NZ, and first attended the Heifetz Institute in the summer of 2018. Dominic will return to the Institute in 2019 as an Artist Fellow, after spending time as a Heifetz on Tour artist, performing during our “Mostly Mendelssohn” series of concerts in the Shenandoah Valley, Highland County, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.
The Mendelssohn-centric tour wrapped up with a gala performance at the Abramson Family Recital Hall, part of the Katzen Arts Center complex at American University in northwest DC. Dominic’s solo turn came with faculty pianist Zhenni Li, performing the first movement of Mendelssohn’s “potent and passionate” (Gramophone magazine) Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major.
