A native of Campos do Jordão, Brazil, Dr. Ana Abrantes directs the Institute’s acclaimed HeifetzPEG program , and manages the daily office and Heifetz On Tour operations year-round.
As a cellist, Dr. Abrantes has performed across the United States and Brazil. She was a core member of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra and Macon Symphony Orchestra. At the University of Georgia, Ana served as the principal cellist of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, the University of Georgia’s Symphony Orchestra, the Hodgson String Quartet, and the Athens Symphony Orchestra.
As an avid educator, Ana Abrantes is a Suzuki certified cello teacher and uses this as the basis for her teaching method. She was the Suzuki Cello Instructor at the UGA Community Music School, in Athens, and at the Newton County Youth Strings program, in Covington, GA.
Ana is also passionate about performing a variety of musical styles. She has performed various recitals with the Brazilian pianist Jessica Pacheco-Hjemlstad in their duo Brasiliana, as well as collaborated with many musicians in diverse musical opportunities including Atlanta Celli, in a production for the Atlanta Falcons. Ana has also recorded a DVD with the ARCO Chamber Orchestra during its 2015 Tour through Brazil. Ana is also featured as cello soloist in Efrem Podgaits’ CD, String Fairy Tale, under the Art Classics label. Dr. Abrantes holds a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master of Music degree in cello performance from the University of Georgia, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello performance with a minor in music theory also from the University of Georgia.
