Violinist Philip Setzer is a founding member of the Emerson String Quartet. He was born in Cleveland, OH, and began studying at the age of five with his parents, both former violinists in the Cleveland Orchestra. An acclaimed soloist, Mr. Setzer was the Bronze Medalist in the 1976 Queen Elisabeth Competition, and has appeared with major orchestras throughout the United States. He has an active performing schedule, both with the Emerson String Quartet, as well as with cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han touring and recording piano trios by Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn and Antonín Dvořák. In addition to teaching at the Heifetz Institute, Mr. Setzer has been a regular faculty member of the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshops at Carnegie Hall and the Jerusalem Music Center. He is Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at SUNY Stony Brook, and regularly presents master classes around the world.
